Therapists for college students near Ann Arbor, MI
I have over 26 years of experience working as a licensed social work therapist and clinical supervisor. My area of expertise is the field of domestic and sexual violence -issues surrounding complex trauma, types of abuse, leaving vs. staying, safety, and healthy/unhealthy relationships. I also address self-esteem, boundary setting, empowerment, conflict resolution, stress/anxiety, depression, gender identity/dysphoria, family conflicts, grief and loss, anger, and coping with life changes. I work with individual adults (primarily women) and utilize a strengths-based, nonjudgmental, empowerment-focused, and client centered approach.
Making the step toward healing is a courageous choice, and in knowing how vulnerable this process can be, I strive to provide a safe, accepting environment for those who are ready to open themselves up to this growth. I believe that all humans are inherently worthy, and I will support you in uncovering this within yourself. There are many obstacles that can get in the way of aligning with your core values and the life you desire, and my goal is to guide you in the learning and unlearning process that can help reconnect you with your true self.

As a therapist she is here to help individuals navigate and seek wellness from a myriad of stressors that can impose psychological distress. she strives to provide a safe and welcoming atmosphere that is free from judgment. Everyone lives a diverse, intersectional existence with idiosyncratic experience. Acknowledging this means relating to others with inclusivity, openness, and humility. This philosophy not only humanizes students, many of whom identify as marginalized community members (e.g., BIPOC, LGBTQ+, accessibility needs, low-SES), but also honors their authenticity. Thus, I practice from an existential-humanistic-relational lens so I can naturally tailor therapy with evidence-based techniques (e.g., CBT, SFT, ACT) and psychological theories (e.g., identity, attachment, multicultural) necessary for understanding students’ intersectionality. I typically work with students experiencing elevated anxiety and depression, while specializing in identity development, interpersonal dynamics (e.g., relating to others), relational trauma, and existential concerns (e.g., authenticity, choice, meaning). Early sessions help form a therapeutic alliance, revealing underlying issues that manifest as psychological distress (e.g., anxiety, depression, trauma). From there, we identify coping skills, foster hope, and alleviate symptoms as you gain insight-oriented feedback. We also collaborate to explore, discover, and empower actions for you to become the most authentic version of self. The modern world is daunting, with a pace and pivot difficult to navigate. The rapid spin of sudden chaos. Steady drift of aimless wander. Dead still of eternal stagnation. As a serving spirit, I provide a healthy space for students to be and become that who they are and will be. Here, all are welcome. Here… all are an expression of hope and self-empowerment.

I aim to meet the individualized needs of each person, couple, and family I work with and take a collaborative approach in setting goals for therapy. I use a family systems approach to explore how multiple areas of a person's life impacts their experiences and current struggles. My work with individuals, as well as couples and families focuses on relationships of all kinds. I address parenting issues, social skills, family conflict, and transitions including entrance into college and the workforce. I have experience working with substance abuse and mental health symptoms, including depression, anxiety, and bipolar disorder. Matthew serves as a companion to those who desire to experience healing, growth, and transformation in their pursuit of the full human experience. He works to offer a space of mutual, compassionate, and empathetic listening to the story your life is telling. Matthew believes that the opportunity to work with you is a sacred privilege, and is committed to discovering a shared process in therapy that honors who you are, your background, and your future path. Practicing therapy with Matthew may include focusing on developing tools and practices to help manage emotions and thoughts, support in healing from past experiences, assistance developing healthier behavioral patterns, and/or establishing new values. However, there is not one therapeutic approach that fits all, which is why he works closely with you to identify your own needs and goals. Matthew is experienced primarily in individual work with adolescents and adults from all backgrounds and genders, in areas related to depression, anxiety, life transitions, relationship issues, interpersonal conflict, identity exploration, finding belonging, discovering purpose, grief/loss, and religious and spiritual questions [and related trauma]. Matthew graduated with a Masters in Social Work from Grand Valley State University in 2024. He is also a graduate of Kuyper College [BS], Cornerstone Theological Seminary [MA], and the Living School for Action and Contemplation. His experience living internationally and attending two universities in multi-cultural and inter-religious environments has deeply shaped how he engages individuals from a diversity of circumstances and backgrounds. Matthew’s professional and academic emphasis on restorative justice practices, as well as the unique cognitive, developmental, and mental health needs of people of all ages has deepened his ability to foster effective therapeutic environments and meaningful relationships with clients. Matthew believes that our growth as people cannot be manufactured or controlled, and is therefore something we can only cooperate with and bear witness to. For many, the journey and practice of our work together becomes an outcome in itself. While Matthew is a generalist when it comes to theoretical orientation, he naturally integrates person-centered, narrative, existential, humanist, mindfulness, and acceptance and commitment approaches.
