Therapists for college students near Ann Arbor, MI
My name is Carolyn Roath. I am a Biblically informed Christian therapist, Master of Clinical Social Work, and owner of my own private telehealth practice. I hold a master’s degree in Clinical Social Work from Michigan State University. My heart for those grieving relational loss and trauma has led me to this work. As a follower of Christ, I seek to create a safe and nurturing environment where the client knows they are free from judgment. It is paramount for me that I hold the vulnerable, tender, and painful parts of my client’s being with dignity and respect. Being trusted by a client is an honor I take very seriously. In my work I strive to empower my clients to be self-led, while gently guiding them with questions to prompt self-reflection. I resonate strongly with attachment theory, Internal Family Systems, and Interpersonal Neurobiology utilizing a strength-based approach. I perceive my role as continually validating clients while helping them process, synthesize, and analyze information through active listening.
You’re trying your best, but life didn’t used to be this hard. Things aren’t going right. You notice it’s harder to be happy, to feel connected, or even to get out of bed in the morning. You want help. YOU’RE NOT ALONE. I can help. I offer a safe place to process all the things you’ve been holding in. The sadness, grief, worry, disappointment, loneliness, shame, and anger, we can work through it. We’ll work together to find the best tools for you to get unstuck. To get you back to living the life you want. To help you discover your authentic, whole self. I use a warm and empathetic approach to therapy, which can be incredibly beneficial to my clients. My focus on creating a comfortable and non-judgmental space for clients to explore their thoughts and feelings allows me to tailor my methods to each client’s specific needs. I have 14 years of experience which brings a wealth of knowledge and skills to the therapeutic relationship, especially with my use of various therapeutic techniques in conjunction with my eclectic theoretical orientation. Clients seeking therapy with me can expect a supportive environment where they can work through challenges and gain new perspectives. Creating a space that feels comfortable and friendly really helps clients open up and explore their thoughts and feelings more freely. Coupled with my various therapeutic techniques displays my well-rounded approach. That helps you reach your therapy goals, quickly.
One of the things I love most about being a therapist is getting to witness people grow into the fullest, most authentic version of themselves. It’s incredibly meaningful to walk alongside someone as they work through challenges, uncover new insights, and build a life that feels more manageable, intentional, and aligned with who they really are. Watching that progress unfold — from the first session to the breakthroughs along the way — is a privilege I never take for granted. In our sessions, you can expect a space that’s centered around you. I always begin by inviting you to share whatever’s been on your mind lately. I find that when we don’t start there, the thoughts or worries closest to the surface can sometimes get in the way of our deeper work. But if you’re not sure what to talk about or nothing specific is coming up that day, that’s totally okay — I’ll guide us back to the goals you’ve set for therapy or revisit what we’ve been working on. My approach is person-centered, which means you get to lead the way and I’ll meet you there with support and structure. When I describe therapy to people in everyday language, I often say it has two layers. The first is what I call the band-aid approach — where I help you build tools and coping strategies that provide immediate relief. Whether you’re managing anxiety, navigating a conflict, or simply feeling overwhelmed, we’ll work on practical ways to feel better right now. From there, we’ll gently dig deeper into the “why” and the “how” — exploring what’s really going on beneath the surface so we can create long-term change. It’s about building a system in your life that helps you respond more effectively to challenges, emotions, or patterns of behavior. I deeply believe that each person’s story is shaped by their unique life experiences, cultural background, family dynamics, relationships, and more. These influences often play a big role in how we view the world and how we respond to stress or conflict. In therapy, I’ll help you make sense of those influences while also working through whatever issues are most present in your life right now. Healing happens when you’re ready for it — not when someone else tells you it’s time.

Taking the first step toward therapy can feel intimidating, especially if you've been carrying the weight of anxiety, trauma, relationship struggles, identity questions, or overwhelming emotions for a long time. You don't have to navigate those challenges alone. I work with young adults who are ready to better understand themselves, break unhelpful patterns, and create lasting change. Whether you're navigating depression, anxiety, trauma, relationship difficulties, personality concerns, life transitions, or questions surrounding identity, therapy can provide both practical tools and a space to process what you've been through. My approach is collaborative, trauma-informed, and tailored to each person. I integrate evidence-based approaches, including Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), while recognizing that every person's experiences and goals are unique.
I am a cognitive-behaviorally trained clinical and neuropsychologist. I obtained my PhD from the University of Connecticut and did clinical psychology re-tooling at Western Michigan University. I work with diverse populations and tend to take a biological/behavioral approach to wellness and mental health. I have a history of working in the college setting as a therapist for a period of approximately seven years and thus I am familiar with the needs and special circumstances of the college-aged population.

Hi! I’m Christen Clark, LMSW. I’m passionate about counseling women going through anxiety, depression, grief or challenging life transitions. In particular, I have a heart for college students, young adults, and women going through pregnancy/postpartum. Life can be hard. Transitions have a tendency to bring up past trauma, anxiety, or depression. Sometimes “high achievers” can be suffering internally with their mental health while no one else knows. If life feels overwhelming, out of control, or it is becoming hard to function - you’re in the right place. There is hope. I know reaching out for help can be intimidating - maybe even scary. My goal is to help you feel at ease in therapy sessions by building a real relationship. I hope to provide a warm, loving presence and to help you recognize your own strengths. My number one priority is making sure we are a good fit and building trust in our therapeutic relationship. I am fueled by my faith in God to treat every woman I encounter with love, support, and grace. You are worthy of love, acceptance, and to see the beauty of life again. Although I am a Christian, I have experience working with women from all kinds of diverse backgrounds. I value your worldview and we can use faith as much or as little as you desire in our sessions. You are not alone. Keeping our depressive or anxious thoughts in the dark is a breeding place for shame. Opening up is the only way to move towards healing. Sometimes, when we shine a light on what seems so dark and shameful we find out it’s not as bad as we thought. As someone who has struggled personally, I provide a non-judgmental atmosphere in our sessions. I am grateful for 8 years of experience in social work after graduating from Grand Valley State University with a Bachelor’s Degree in social work and a Master’s Degree in social work from Spring Arbor University. I’m currently providing exclusively online individual therapy services. Good news - no matter where you’re located in the State of Michigan, I can help.

At Willow Birch Therapy, our mission is to foster healing and growth by recognizing that emotional struggles, like the branches of a tree, extend from the deeply rooted experiences and traumas hidden beneath the surface. Are you feeling overwhelmed by the pressure of school, grades, social groups and trying to keep up with everything you're supposed to be doing? Maybe you find yourself comparing yourself to others, wondering if you're falling behind or not doing enough? Maybe you’re overwhelmed by school, work, family expectations, pressures of needing to know your life goals or all of it at once. You might feel stuck and need some support and or just exhausted trying to balance everything. Whether you're navigating college or grad school, exploring relationships, or dealing with family pressures, I’m here to walk alongside you. If you’re in that in-between space, thinking you need to have things figured out, questioning yourself, or just trying to keep up, I get it. Therapy can be a space to unpack and process, where you can slow down and start to explore what matters to you and what are some patterns that may be holding you back. You're not alone if you're asking questions like: "Am I doing enough?" "Why does everyone else seem to have it figured out?" "How do I make time for myself when everything feels urgent?" Whether you’re dealing with anxiety, depression, life transitions, family dynamics, grief, or the social exhaustion of trying to stay connected while also needing space this season of life is a lot. In our work together, I’ll meet you where you are. I offer a space where you can show up as yourself. I believe in being real with you, validating what’s hard, and gently helping you explore what feels stuck or confusing. We’ll talk about things like identity, relationships, stress, loss, and how to care for yourself even when everything feels like it’s moving fast. Whether you’re feeling stuck, emotionally exhausted, or just trying to figure out your next steps, my intention is to walk with you and offer a steady, supportive space to explore, grow, and heal. I earned my Master’s in Social Work from the University of Michigan with a specialization in Interpersonal Practice in Integrated Health and Mental Health and completed my undergraduate degree in Psychology at Grand Valley State University. I draw from a person-centered approach, believing that my clients are the experts in their own lives. My role is to offer support, perspective, and tools as we work collaboratively toward your goals.
