Therapists for college students near Duke University
If life feels like you're working through a to-do-list that is never going to end, I can relate! We will collaborate to make life less about surviving and more about thriving! Therapy is a journey not a straight path, but one with space to laugh, cry, reflect, stumble, and grow. With me as your ally we will explore what’s holding you back from feeling joy, connection, and emotional steadiness. If you’re sitting across from me, know that I’m on your team — whether that means listening deeply, challenging you to align with your goals, or creating a space for you to be yourself so you can grow.
Author Shannon Bream inspired the name through her book, The Women of the Bible Speak”, which entails the wisdom of 16 women in the bible and their lessons for today. The book provides a sense of hope and light to the reader. When women of God speak, you’re wise to listen, take notes, and learn. With that being said, it’s my obligation that when I speak, it’s full of wisdom, with expectation to provide hope and reassurance to individuals’ lives and circumstances. The mission of VicNikolSpeaks: Counseling and Wellness, PLLC is to inspire, motivate, uplift, encourage and support all individuals through life’s challenges and transitions. It's time to uproot the unhealthy seeds that were planted by life or people that have caused weeds like hurt, anger, shame, etc. to grow inside of you and replant seeds of healing, love, peace, joy, and freedom. You have the power to replant healing. It’s time to grow! What you water grows! Are you watering seeds of healing or your seeds of hurt? Let’s dig in!
My name is Shameca D. Ricks . I am a native of the Drakes Community in Battleboro, NC. In 2000, I graduated from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte with a Bachelor's Degree in Psychology and a minor in Gerontological Studies. Upon graduation, I worked for nine years as a Director of Social Services within nursing homes and rehabilitation centers. I worked closely with hospice residents, assisting families in making decisions surrounding end of life care. In 2013, I graduated with a Master's Degree in Social Work specializing in Substance Abuse Treatment from East Carolina University. Recently, I have worked with children and adolescents with childhood mental health disorders. I also work with adults providing individual, marital, and family counseling. I am also an LGBTQ+ affirming therapist who has experience in working with all gender identities across this spectrum. If you are experiencing challenges with substance abuse, anxiety, depression, stress, mood disorders, or simply need a helping hand with life difficulties, I am here to help. I strive to provide a relaxed and comfortable environment that promotes trust and healing. We are facing difficult times in the world and I am dedicated to walking with you every step of the way as you do not have to do life alone. My therapeutic approach is eclectic and tailored to the needs of the individual. I utilize CBT, Strengths-Based, DBT, and Solutions Focused approaches to provide practical strategies, behavioral change, and personal growth. It does not matter who you are or what you have been through, you can recover!
"I feel broken and I'm pissed about it." You were independent, high achieving, organized. Then you got the medical diagnosis, and everything changed. If you have been through a stressful or traumatic medical illness, you know firsthand the challenges of building a care team that you trust and coming into a new relationship with your body. My role is to partner with you as you face these challenges. If you are caregiving for individuals as they move through physical changes, it can be difficult to find balance. I can help you find your footing as you navigate caring for self and other, face difficult medical decisions, or move through anticipatory grief in the context of potentially complex relationship dynamics. "I just want to get back to normal." "What does it even mean to 'live with' this? How can they say that?" "This is happening on top of everything else! I don't have time to slow down, I'm in pain, and I can't sleep." "I had trauma before. This just makes dealing with it harder." These thoughts and reactions are not uncommon. Individualized, trauma-informed psychotherapy can help. To learn more, please reach out for a free phone consultation. I am happy to address any questions or concerns you may have prior to initiating therapy, and I look forward to meeting you soon.

Are you confused and do not know what your next steps are? Do you look in the mirror and no longer recognize the face staring back at you? If so, just know that this is the first step to a new start and I look forward to us working together to assist you in finding the balance. I have a love for people who are in the unknown and stuck points. People who are uncertain of themselves or their identity. Individuals that need to feel empowered and healed. Ones who have learned to operate on autopilot in the outside world only due to avoiding healing the inside world. If this sounds like you, reach out so we can unpack it together. During our sessions, we will develop a collaborative relationship where we work on any presiding issues that you have. This will allow you to really dig deep within yourself to gain a better understanding of your self-awareness. I provide a safe, non-judgmental space for you to be your most authentic self. My therapeutic style isn’t your textbook therapist. I aim to provide some light through relatability, experience and knowledge, while we take a close look at how we can rewrite your story. My therapeutic approach is eclectic and I am to be more holistic. I will combine my personal and professional experiences to get you to a place of whole healing. Together, we will find a balance and your truest self.

In our sessions, I provide a non-judgmental and safe environment where you can explore your thoughts, feelings, and experiences. My goal is to help you resolve your stressors quickly and effectively which means targeting the root cause rather than just the symptoms.
