Therapists for college students near New York University
I work collaboratively with students who face a variety of challenges, including life transitions, relationship issues, and navigating queer identities. College and graduate school typically occur at pivotal developmental points for people in terms of figuring out who they are, what they want, and separating/individuating from parental figures. Together, we will work to understand your inner life, what works and what doesn't in terms of your thinking, behavior and ways of relating to others. Often, patterns develop that help us stay safe and secure when we're young, but would benefit from re-examination and modification to live a more fulfilling adult life. I have a sub-specialty working with people with Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD), a highly distressing fixation on a perceived appearance defect that can impact daily functioning and quality of life. I help you understand where the appearance fixation originated, including negative self appraisals and rituals/compulsions that accompany BDD. Learning to face feared and avoided situations is a gradual process that takes place over time, freeing you from the hold of BDD and leading to improved functioning and a more satisfying life.
Hi my name is Kimberlin and i am a licensed therapist in NY. My passion lies in supporting clients to build confidence and self-esteem, foster a positive body-image, navigate dating and break ups, work with couples through all stages of their relationship, ease anxieties through developing coping skills, uncover individual strengths, and nurture the relationship one has with themselves.
Growth and healing happen when we create space for all parts of ourselves to be witnessed and held. In our work together, I’ll help you develop a compassionate relationship with your inner world while working with you to develop skills and understanding to navigate life’s complexities with greater ease and authenticity. I work with clients of all ages and backgrounds who struggle with issues that impact all areas of their lives: work, friendship, partnership, family, and sex. Some common themes in my practice include: LGBTQ+ identities, gender & sexuality, low self-esteem, anxiety, depression, relationship challenges in both traditional and non-traditional relationship structures, complex trauma, sexual trauma, obsessional thinking, communication issues, life transitions, chronic illness, and stress from sexism, racism, ableism. I am a licensed psychotherapist dedicated to supporting clients find understanding, meaning, and change. I work with individuals and relationship partners. I would love to learn about you, where you are in life, and how I can support you to live a more fulfilling life.
I view the therapeutic relationship as similar to canoeing - it requires you to provide the steering, while I supply the momentum, and motivation and commitment from both of us to get to the destination. In our work together, I believe in giving you space to explore your story, as it was, as it is, as you want it to be, in a safe, supportive, empowering way that will, in time, allow you to feel confident and secure within your mind, body, and relationships. Within my practice, I utilize eco-therapy as a means to build an objective, curious, and comfortable relationship with the physical world around us, in order to practice building that same relationship within ourselves and with the people around us. It can feel so easy to get swept up in judgemental, shame-based thoughts, creating false perceptions, emotional pain and isolation. And yet, in the same way we prepare for cold winter nights or sweltering summer heat, so too can we weather the storms of our social and emotional worlds. To orient our work towards achieving your therapeutic goals, I work with Internal Family Systems, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, existential therapy, somatic therapy, animal therapy, ecotherapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, CBT and mindfulness practices. Utilizing this interdisciplinary blend we can identify and work through the obstacles to then find ways to move forward and love yourself into creating your ideal reality. I accept individuals, couples and families of all genders, identities, religions, and backgrounds. With a client-centered approach I believe you are the greatest expert of your own life, and in order to effectively row this canoe I ask for trust, honesty, commitment, curiosity, and engagement, so I, in return, will provide compassion, patience, knowledge, and reflection.
The clients with whom I work tend to seek a better understanding of their coping mechanisms, relationship patterns, and self-limiting beliefs. I often work with college and graduate students that struggle with negative beliefs related to their capabilities and worthiness. I help clients to explore how past experiences have contributed to developing coping mechanisms, such as persistent worry, perfectionistic tendencies, and hypervigilance in social situations, that may have been helpful in the past but are no longer serving them in the present.

We specialize in cultivating close, long-term therapeutic relationships with diverse and underrepresented populations, such as those from creative subcultures, intersecting minority identities, and non-traditional lifestyles and identities. Each one of us has a different psychotherapy style, and we do not use just one therapeutic modality. We prioritize ongoing learning and exploration of our own mental processes, in conjunction with learning traditional evidence-based psychotherapies. Whether you are a busy working professional, or having no luck with finding love, or struggling to connect with others, or suffering from your emotions, we want to learn who you are and help guide you toward finding the peace, comfort, confidence, and resilience to get you through life.

Hi! I’m Rachel Wolk (she/her), a neurodiverse, LGBTQIA+ affirming therapist. I’m passionate about supporting folks through anxiety, complex trauma, Autism, and ADHD. I hold a Bachelor of Arts in Social Work from the University of Pittsburgh and a Master of Social Work from Columbia University, where I specialized in Advanced Clinical Practice. I'm also trained in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) therapy. My approach is grounded in trauma-informed, relationship-based work. I often integrate sensory and somatic interventions, Internal Family Systems (IFS), and Coherence Therapy to support the mind-body-environment connection. I believe in honoring each person’s unique nervous system and lived experience, and I strive to create a space where all parts of you feel seen and supported. While I do offer in-person sessions, we’ll likely meet virtually to better accommodate the flexibility needed for a college schedule. That said, I’m always open to making exceptions on a case-by-case basis if in-person sessions feel essential to creating a safe and secure therapeutic space for you. If you have any questions, feel free to send me an email, I'm happy to set up a free 15-minute consultation call!

We offer affirming psychotherapy and sex therapy for individuals, couples, multiple-partner relationships, and poly and leather families. We are experts in alternative sexualities, specializing in working with adults in the kink/BDSM, polyamorous/non-monogamous, trans/gender-nonconforming/non-binary, LGBQIA+, and sex work communities. We work with those who live openly and out; and those who have more conservative and private lifestyles. We use a variety of therapeutic approaches, including holistic, person-centered, collaborative, empowerment-focused, trauma-informed, IFS, DBT, and EMDR. We welcome people of every ability, age, gender, national origin, race/ethnicity, religious affiliation, and sexual orientation, and we cultivate space for conversations that de/reconstruct whiteness, and cultivate positive racial and intersectional identities. People seek therapy for many reasons, including: a deeper understanding of identity or sexuality; difficulty adjusting to relationship difficulties or traumatic experiences; anxiety and/or depression; sexual functioning issues; compulsive thoughts or behavior; and/or changes in relationship structure or power dynamic. Most people decide to work with my practice because of my specialized training and experience, or because they feel more comfortable speaking to a therapist with first-hand knowledge of alternative identities and lifestyles.
