Therapists for college students near New York University
Natalia is the Associate Director of the Counseling Service at Vassar College, where she counsels students from diverse racial, ethnic, and socio-economic backgrounds. In addition, at Vassar, she trains the next generation of psychotherapists as a senior supervisor to MSW students and Post-Doctoral Candidates. Natalia was born and raised in South America, and from a young age, she was interested in how culture, family, and the environment shape who we are and who we want to become. Her quest to understand cultures, traditions, and systems led her to learn languages, live, study, and grow on three continents. Thus, Natalia approaches her psychotherapeutic from a multicultural lens, helping you make sense of what brought you to this moment as a base to understand where you want to go and support you as you get there. Natalia trained as a psychotherapist in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and received her Master of Social Work from the University of Pennsylvania where she found her passion for working with college students as a trainee at the Counseling and Psychological Services of UPENN. Natalia received the 2015 Clinical Excellence Award from the Pennsylvania Society for Clinical Social Work and is an American Psychological Association Division 39 Society for Psychoanalysis and Psychoanalytic Psychology Multicultural Concerns Scholar. She is also engaged in post-graduate education training at the William Alanson White Institute in NYC for the treatment of people with eating disorders.

Our Mission Statement: An Innovative Approach to Therapy Here at Tompkins Community Counseling, we tailor to your needs and will work in the environment that is best for you. Our goal is to provide you with professional, client-led, goal-based counseling, while working in whatever setting is most comfortable for you— in the community, online, or in our office. We understand how difficult it can be to ask for help and discuss your life challenges, so we try to make the journey as comfortable as possible for you. Simply put, we achieve this by following your lead throughout the counseling process. We use a Client-Led Counseling model, finding strengths that you already have and building on them to reach resolutions. We follow the pace of our clients to help them achieve control over their lives, helping them make positive choices by offering them specific tools and practical strategies for change. We also practice a wide variety of treatment models and support you in choosing one that is a good fit for you. We will help you to define your long term goals, allowing our sessions to be driven by focused goals that will lead to a successful discharge.
I often work with young people struggling to understand who they are and why they do the things they do. This may be felt as a gnawing sense of dissatisfaction or despair, or a more intense experience of feeling lost and out of control. We work together to identify your concerns in a safe environment that emphasizes giving language to emotional experience, identifying unconscious patterns of behavior, and finding meaning in your life.
We are experiencing challenging times. The effects of the COVID-19 pandemic are numerous and have created a long lasting crisis situation that is exacerbating depression, anxiety, feelings of fear and hopelessness, and triggering unhealthy regressive patterns and behaviors. It has placed stress on marriages, partnerships and families, and has left us feeling disconnected, frustrated and fearful. We are also experiencing a massive shift in our paradigm regarding race and ethnicity, which necessitates a different therapeutic consciousness that is more holistic, and that includes the issue of how racism and inequality affect mental health. As we navigate the “new normal,” it’s important to have a supportive space that can help define issues that are problematic so we can adjust accordingly to the harmful effects of the current crisis. In addition to treating mood disorders and trauma that affect daily functioning, as a relationship therapist, I believe the foundation of all relationships begins with the most important relationship of all – the one you have with yourself. Perhaps the life you have is different from the life you desire. If so, we will focus on core issues that might be preventing you from living that life. Some of the challenges you might be facing at this time include: Toxic/unhealthy dynamics in families of origin. A lack of strong role models. The search for a partner who more closely fulfills your needs. The decision of when/if to start a family. A career that means more than just a paycheck and allows you to live up to your full potential and desires. Unexpected health challenges. A nonconforming identity. We will not only address symptoms. We will examine the changes you want to make to live a more fulfilling life.

Hello, Thank you for taking a peek at my info. I am passionate about human potential for change. I believe people have the inherent capacity to heal and grow. To support this change, I provide a nonjudgmental, warm, and collaborative therapeutic space. I will work with you to tap into your strengths, gain insight into behaviors that might currently feel stuck or confusing, and learn skills to empower you to effectively deal with stress and emotional ups and downs. My approach is tailored to your specific goals and circumstances, and typically includes a mixture of traditional “talk” therapy with mindfulness, somatic, and trauma-informed practices. I am committed to an anti-oppressive, inclusive approach that welcomes all experiences. I am licensed to provide telehealth in NY, GA, and FL. I also provide in-person sessions in GA.
The therapy session is a time and space one sets aside to focus on self. To be with self. And to build one’s self. It can be challenging to reflect on patterns, thoughts and emotions, relationships, past events and/or change, but it can also be transformative and rewarding. My role as your therapist is to witness your process and to reflect back with you along the way. The therapeutic relationship is an essential piece of my practice and is built on honesty, trust, empathy, and compassion. In conjunction with traditional psychotherapeutic frameworks (CBT, DBT, Gestalt, Psychodynamic), I use Expressive Arts Therapy (Movement, Drama, Music/Sound, Art) to help foster a creative process. When applied therapeutically, a creative process can help a person heal, open up to change, and may offer new feelings, thoughts, insights, and perspectives As a Dance/Movement Therapist, I specialize in using movement as a tool to identify, explore, and shift the way one relates to self, other, and the world around. I believe engaging in an integrative, body based psychotherapy process is a direct and effective path to embodied growth and transformation.
Art therapy is for the individual who has difficulty verbalizing what they are going through. Creating art helps the person work through the trauma, anxiety, depression etc. One does NOT need to have any art experience knowledge or talent! Only an open mind to exploring their feelings and emotions through a creative lens!
Feeling stuck or unfulfilled in different areas of your life? Would you like support that is professional and confidential? Unlike talking to friends and family, therapy offers a safe space where you can put words to things that are difficult to say, and confront things from your past that seem to interfere with your life in the present. Therapy can lead to deeper self-awareness and insight that can empower you to make the changes you need to live your best life. Everyone has the power to grow and heal with the right conditions and tools. I'm a licensed clinical psychologist with over 15 yrs of experience. I've worked in various settings with people from diverse backgrounds, but college student mental health has been my passion. I've worked in the counseling centers at John Jay, UT Health Science Center, Princeton, and Cornell to name a few. I've also been a certified academic success coach.

My therapeutic approach entails a core belief in a strengths-based approach. I believe that each person has strengths that they can tap into, to achieve their therapeutic goals. I also incorporate trauma-informed care as this modality is a broad support approach to how trauma has impacted a person. I always strive to provide clients with a safe, supportive environment in which they can feel seen, heard, and supported. You are the expert in your own life, in your journey and I will do my best to ensure that I support you in this journey. My overall intention is to allow you to feel comfortable in the space we create together.
