Taking the step to begin therapy is courageous, and my goal is to provide a safe, supportive space where you feel understood. I believe change is always possible because our brains are capable of growth and healing. I work with adolescents and adults facing challenges such as anxiety, depression, ADHD, executive functioning struggles, and life transitions. My approach combines evidence-based methods like cognitive-behavioral therapy with insights from neuropsychology and psychopharmacology. I also help clients strengthen focus, resilience, and confidence through metacognitive skill development. In addition to my clinical practice, I teach psychology and counseling at the university level and have published research on learning, neuroplasticity, and the positive effects of therapy on the brain. These experiences help me bring both professional expertise and practical strategies to my work. Most importantly, therapy with me is collaborative. I’ll meet you where you are and partner with you to build a path forward that feels empowering, hopeful, and sustainable.
Hi, I'm Dr. Annie Moten. Since earning my doctorate in Clinical Psychology from Rutgers University, I have approached therapy as a collaborative journey, walking alongside my clients to help them understand their experiences without judgment. My goal is to support individuals in creating a life that acknowledges both their pain and their potential for growth. I strive to build trust through straightforwardness, kindness, irreverence, and humor, creating a space that is both safe and empowering. Drawing on my extensive DBT training and lived experience, I foster emotional containment and autonomy. I also incorporate creative outlets. Our approach at Better Life Associates is active and collaborative. We believe that a strong working alliance with our patients is critical to help achieve emotional insights in treatment that lead to positive and lasting change. We also help identify patterns of behavior that hold individuals back from leading a better and more fulfilling life. Whether you are seeking in-person treatment in Long Island, NY or teletherapy in NY, NJ, or PA, I'd be delighted to hear from you. I have limited therapy session times currently available in my schedule, so let's set up an initial preliminary call soon to discuss how we can work together.

Many of the people I work with are Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC) who are struggling to navigate multiple areas of their life like work, school, family, relationships, or the intersectionalities of their identities. Many talk about often feeling overwhelmed, stressed, or stuck. This then kicks off to what feels like a never ending cycle of confusion, frustration, depression, and anxiety. Therapy is an opportunity to find clarity and work through these obstacles to help people get their life back on track. My clients and I work together to develop more mindful behaviors to help lead a more meaningful and healthy life. People develop certain attitudes and perspectives based on their early life experiences to survive when they were younger. But these attitudes and perspectives are not helping now which is part of the reason why people might feel stuck. By looking at these attitudes and perspectives closely, people can learn to change how they talk to themselves, how they react to their emotions. and take more thoughtful actions to move forward towards a more authentic and fulfilling life. My practice integrates several evidence-based treatments such as Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy for Psychosis (CBTp), Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Mindfulness, and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) that encompasses principles of person-centered, recovery-oriented, trauma-informed, multiculturalism, and strength-based values. With my compassionate, collaborative, non-judgmental, and down-to-earth style, therapy can address the things that are getting in the way of people’s life so that they can move forward. COMMON EXPERIENCES THAT I WORK WITH PEOPLE ON: - It feels like your mind is playing tricks on you - It feels like your eyes or ears are playing tricks on you - It feels like something odd is going on or hard to explain - Confused at times whether something is real or imaginary - You feel suspicious or mistrustful of others - It feels like you have little control over your thoughts - It feels like others can hear your thoughts or read your mind - Having thoughts or beliefs that you or others find strange - Race-related identity, culture, and intersectionality - Cultural and systemic trauma and oppression

Your struggles are unique and complex. As a psychologist my aim is to help you explore your personal narratives, to understand how your past is affecting your present and keeping you from fulfilling your values. Whether you are experiencing difficulty with relationships, life events, healing from trauma, or simply don't find yourself enjoying your life as you once did, I will help you feel grounded while we gain a non-judgmental perspective on your struggles and put our minds together to strategize ways forward. I specialize in treatments for trauma, depression, anxiety, job stress, and relationship issues. I take a pragmatic and eclectic approach by integrating psychodynamic theories with evidence-based tools. I draw on treatments ranging from CBT, ACT, and CPT, tailoring treatment to your unique needs and experiences. I completed advanced training at Haverford College and the Dept. of Veteran Affairs Hospital where I continue to work as a trauma specialist. Finding a therapist you click with can be a daunting task but is a key part of healing. In therapy, I am open, creative, and curious. If my approach sounds right for you or if you’d like to learn more, please do not hesitate to reach out or visit my site to schedule an appointment for a free consultation. Most people who look at you might never know how much you are struggling. Your pattern of holding it all in, staying busy, or pulling away from others has worked well enough to get you through… till now. Now, it feels more like you’re caught in an endless maze of thoughts and worries, or like there’s a weighted blanket dragging you down. When anxiety or depression are present, everything in life can feel more difficult. I am a trauma-informed therapist specializing in helping you unpack those things that connect your past and present to build a more fulfilling, authentic future. I take a practical and straightforward approach to therapy and am comfortable with discomfort if it means making progress. As your therapist, I will take the time to see things from your point of view. You know your life best, so I will listen and understand. My sessions are open, honest, and thoughtful. Therapy shouldn't be another place where you have to pretend. I will work to understand the real you and use my experience to help you.
