Hi there, welcome! My name is Dr. Steffanie Grossman (she/her/hers). I am a Psychologist, Certified Eating Disorders Specialist and registered Animal-Assisted Therapist with a small dog/tootsie-roll lookalike named Rockstar. I provide therapy for a wide range of concerns, with specialties in the areas of eating disorders, self-esteem, and LGBTQ+ related concerns. Rockstar is frequently in the room, so you can pet him to self-soothe, look at him to distract or allow yourself to be more open, or to just laugh at when he wants his belly rubs. Therapy is something I am very passionate about, and I truly enjoy helping my clients empower themselves to live the lives they wish to live and increase self-compassion. I hope this page and my website can help you determine if we would be a good team in helping you reach your goals, find empowerment through your struggles, and embrace peace. I'd be happy to talk with you further during a free brief phone consultation to further help decide. I would love to hear from you.
You may be seeking therapy after a breakup, sudden loss, or overwhelming life experience — especially if you’re someone who is thoughtful, self-aware, and used to functioning at a high level. You understand your anxiety, trauma, or relationship patterns intellectually, yet when something triggers you, your body and emotions react in ways you can’t think you're way out of. Insight alone hasn’t brought the relief you expected. You need a different kind of support. I'll help you find change beyond talk therapy. We can work together in weekly sessions or extended EMDR intensives for accelerated healing-especially when weekly therapy feels too slow or life doesn’t allow for a long-term pace. EMDR helps the brain & body process what’s still “stuck,” so triggers lose their intensity and old patterns no longer run the show. If you’re ready to explore whether therapy with me or an EMDR intensive can help you feel real relief, schedule a free consultation call. I typically respond within 1 business day & we’ll start by talking through what you’re hoping for and whether this feels like a good fit. In-person sessions in East Dallas & online therapy in TX, FL, LA, and VA.
Empathy First is committed to helping people from all walks of life. Whether you are experiencing depression, anxiety, or seek help to maintain interpersonal relationships, we commit to helping you reach your goals with compassion, and respect. We put people first, and care less about a diagnosis or label. We strive to bring relief no matter your circumstances. We are committed to helping people from all walks of life. Give us the opportunity to help you reach your full potential.
Many people start thinking about therapy because, emotionally, they don’t feel good. Maybe your emotions end up taking you for a ride and you feel helpless to stop it. Emotions come and go, but they can sometimes feel endless, especially if they are intense. Or maybe you are struggling to get in touch with your emotions and you find it difficult to connect. Either way, what ends up making it worse is the power struggle we get into with our own emotions. We want to push away the ones that feel bad and force the ones that feel good, but that never works for long. Wouldn’t it be easier to avoid the power struggle completely?

At Severance Therapy, we’re proud to be a diverse collective of clinicians and staff—some of whom identify within the LGBTQIA+ spectrum, and others who are fierce, informed allies deeply committed to this community. What unites us is a shared dedication to providing affirming, culturally competent care in a space where authenticity is celebrated, not questioned. Many of our clinicians bring personal experience with addiction recovery, sexual identity exploration, and the complexities of queer life—from coming out and dealing with internalized stigma to navigating sobriety in a culture that often centers around substances. Others have spent their professional lives walking alongside queer clients and communities, engaging in continual learning, advocacy, and personal reflection to be the kind of allies who show up loudly and consistently. Our team includes LGBTQIA+ therapists and allied professionals from a range of racial, cultural, and gender identities. Some are in long-term recovery. Some are sex-positive and kink-aware. Some bring academic expertise, while others bring years of boots-on-the-ground experience in queer spaces, harm reduction, and sober living. Together, we offer a dynamic, compassionate, and deeply relatable therapeutic environment—because we know healing happens best when you feel seen, heard, and understood by people who truly get it. The college experience is not what Hollywood would have you believe. In addition to being academically challenging, students often face other challenges such as learning how to navigate the logistics of life (such as making it to an 8:00 a.m. class!) without the oversight and structure of parents, learning how to establish new friendships, learning relationship skills, and finding balance in their lives. It can simply be overwhelming. You may just need a little help. I am an LCSW and have 30 years experience in the social work field and have spent the past 6 years providing mental health counseling with students in a university setting - my favorite population ever! I have worked with students dealing with adjustment to college, executive functioning, relationship issues and navigating helicopter parents. College students can find themselves experiencing depression, anxiety, OCD and sometimes this is the age when issues like bipolar disorder and schizophrenia arise. Sometimes past trauma begins to rear its ugly head and cause issues that need addressing. Asking for professional help can be scary; but can help you determine if you might just need some skills to help you better cope or if you have deeper issues going on. Just know that you are the one in control in counseling sessions - I can't insist you share more than you are ready to share or "make" you do anything you don't want to do! You are the boss! I would love to walk with you in your journey! This can be a very exciting time and we want you to make the most of the opportunity.
You’ve always been the one who holds it together. The friend everyone leans on, the one who keeps the peace, even when you're falling apart inside. You’re kind, thoughtful, and always thinking about how others feel—sometimes to the point of losing sight of what you need. Maybe you grew up in a home where speaking up was risky, or you were labeled as “too much.” Now, in college or early adulthood, you feel lost - constantly second-guessing yourself, unsure who you are outside of relationships or achievements. You want to feel more grounded, confident, and in control of your life—but you’re not sure where to start.
College is the ultimate life experience, but it can also cause a lot of anxiety, doubt, confusion, and feelings of inadequacy. It also brings along questions of “am I good enough,” “did I choose the right path,” and “how am I going to get through this”? Guess what? These are all normal feelings and thoughts that every college student experiences to some degree or another, and I am here to help you navigate them! However, what happens if tragedy strikes, or you find yourself struggling with disabling anxiety, or chronic pain and/or illness? That was the predicament I found myself in during Graduate School. I received a Traumatic Brain Injury along with a Spinal Injury halfway through my MSW. I thought it was all over for me, I thought I was going to fail out of school, and was told I could never work in the field of social work. Well, I’m here to tell you they were WRONG! I made it through all the trials and tribulations, graduated with Honors, and I am here to help you navigate your struggles and help you continue to pursue your dreams! If you are struggling with daily college life, are experiencing debilitating mental health issues, or are trying to power through chronic pain and/or illness to acquire your college degree and make your dreams come true I am here to help you on your journey!

Mental health is defined as the ability to love, and the ability to work; to be able to have stable and emotionally fulfilling relationships with others, to take care of your daily needs, and to be able to enjoy using your time creatively and productively. As a counselor, I aim to join with my clients and help them identify their troubles, explore their origins, and create unique solutions to help them live the life they hope for. While my work is very relational and focuses more on meeting the unique needs of individuals, I use specific techniques drawn from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy Skills, and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. I have seven years experience working with young adults, especially neurodivergent young adults on the autism spectrum or with ADHD or learning differences. I particularly enjoy vocational counseling and helping clients navigate life transitions. Many of my clients have complicated diagnositic histories and may have struggled to connect with other counselors in the past. I accept insurance through Headway and also accept private pay through card, cash, check, or Zelle. Please feel free to ask me about sliding scale.
