Therapists for college students near New York University
Being a student can bring a lot of pressure, uncertainty, and emotional weight. If you are feeling stuck, anxious, or carrying pain that is hard to explain, you are not alone. I am here to support you and help you make sense of what you are experiencing in a way that feels honest and respectful. My approach is trauma informed, queer affirming, and non-more pathologizing. I believe your symptoms make sense in the context of your experiences. Together we will explore those patterns with care and curiosity, not judgment. I draw from EMDR, Internal Family Systems, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, and Eastern philosophy to support healing, growth, and connection to your values. This work is always shaped by you, your story, your pace, and your goals. If you are ready to begin or just curious about starting, I would be happy to connect.
I’m a licensed therapist who works with adults and young adults navigating anxiety, stress, life transitions, and times when you just feel stuck or unsure about what’s next. I aim to provide a steady, supportive space where you can talk openly and feel heard without judgment. You don’t need to have everything figured out before starting—therapy can be a place to sort things out as you go. I see therapy as a collaborative and practical process. My role is to listen, ask thoughtful questions, and help you better understand what’s getting in your way. Together, we’ll focus on what matters most to you and work toward meaningful, realistic change. I often use approaches like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) to help you build tools you can actually use day to day—whether that’s managing stress, getting out of your own head, or feeling more confident in your decisions. We can take things at your pace, and there’s no pressure to share more than you’re ready for. I began my career doing street outreach with individuals experiencing homelessness in Washington, DC. That experience shaped how I approach this work today—it taught me the importance of meeting people where they are, showing up consistently, and creating a space built on respect and trust. Outside of therapy, I enjoy going to the movies with friends, staying active, and spending time in the park. I also like trying new restaurants around the city.
You might be someone who generally has things together. You’re responsible, capable, and used to handling things on your own, but internally, things feel harder than it looks. Your mind may be constantly racing, second-guessing, or getting stuck on certain thoughts. Maybe anxiety, OCD, perfectionism, or stress is making it harder to enjoy school, relationships, or everyday life, or you're navigating a major transition and feeling overwhelmed behind the scenes. I work with students who want to better understand what’s going on internally and learn how to respond differently. Many of my clients are high-achieving and motivated but feel stuck in patterns of anxiety, overthinking, perfectionism, or avoidance that are hard to break alone. Together, we'll work on changing how you relate to difficult thoughts and emotions so they have less power over your daily life. I also work with students coping with chronic illness, chronic pain, or physical symptoms that don’t have clear medical answers. I help clients understand the mind-body connection and how stress, anxiety, and the nervous system can influence physical symptoms while taking their experiences seriously. My approach is practical, collaborative, and warm. I strive to create a space where you feel comfortable sharing what’s on your mind without judgment while building evidence-based skills you can use in everyday life. My goal is to help you feel more confident, resilient, and better equipped to navigate life's challenges.

I am a psychotherapist in private practice in Manhattan. After finishing a Masters of Social Work at the University of Pennsylvania, I completed a four year post-graduate program at the William Alanson White Institute, a psychoanalytic institute in New York City. In my practice, I work with people who are experiencing a variety of concerns, including depression, anxiety and relationship difficulties. I also work with individuals who are interested in improving their understanding of themselves or an aspect of their lives, or who want to be better able to make choices that lead to a sense of fulfillment. My goal is to provide a warm and collaborative relationship in which these topics can be explored. I believe that a successful therapeutic relationship is based on trust and can help bring about growth and change. I offer clinical supervision to psychotherapists in private practice and as part of the William Alanson White Institute's Intensive Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy Training Program. I am also an Associate Editor for the academic journal Contemporary Psychoanalysis.
Times of transition are exciting and challenging. Starting something new, moving through inflection points in your education and career, preparing for completion and uncertainty while you figure out what's next, are all important processes everyone hopes will go smoothly - but sometimes they can feel rocky. Even good changes or subtle shifts can feel unsettling, especially for highly sensitive people. If social, academic or emotional / mental health issues are stressing you and making it hard to feel confident and supported in working towards your goals, therapy can be a great tool to help increase understanding about "how it all works" and get support in developing patience and progress towards deepening clarity and commitment to your goals. Anxieties, insecurity, depression, difficult patterns in relationships or work, and problems focusing can be understood and changed, so you have more energy and confidence to devote to living. Become more connected to yourself and others through a specialized process of exploration with a trained professional, and see a difference in your life. A therapist’s expertise and experience are very important, but the *key* ingredient of effective therapy is a “good fit” between you and your therapist. If you’d like to meet and see how it would be to work together, I would be pleased to hear from you. Beginning work as a psychotherapist in clinic settings in 1995, I opened my private practice in 2002. I received my Master’s Degree in Social Work from New York University, am a New York City based Licensed Clinical Social Worker (licensed in New York and New Jersey), and earned a certificate in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy from the NYFS Institute.
I believe that all of us have had some challenges in our lives whether that translates to bigger traumas or smaller hardships. As a result of our challenges, we have beliefs about who we are and our place in the world. I use evidence-based practices including EMDR to identify and manage triggers that may manifest in fear, anxiety, and negative beliefs about who we are and what we deserve. Let me help you break free from your People-Pleasing, Perfectionist, and/or Procrastinating tendencies and find peace with being your authentic self.

As a Creative Arts Therapist, Music Therapist, and Credentialed Alcohol & Substance Abuse Counselor, I offer talk therapy with the option of using creative arts tools to assist you in your process. I have 15 years experience with 13 years working in inpatient psychiatry, providing therapy for people in acute mental health crises. You aren’t alone in your mental health struggles. As a mental health counselor for LGBTQIA folks, young adults, adults, and teens, I provide a gentle and collaborative environment for navigating issues relating to trauma, anxiety, depression, body image and shame, self-esteem, ADHD, OCD, identity exploration, family and life conflicts, low motivation, and emotional dysregulation. At all times, I believe in teamwork and accountability, remaining open to feedback and supportive in working toward your goals. I'm especially passionate about the concept of neuroplasticity (the brain's capacity to change, adapt, and form new neural pathways or ways of thinking) and humanism, which suggests we all naturally want to heal and self-actualize. I look forward to empowering your brain’s healing journey, fostering your personal growth, and navigating life's challenges in our work together. I'm dedicated to providing a safe, nonjudgmental space for vulnerability and self-expression. That’s why I take a warm, collaborative, and humorous approach to care, tailoring treatment to your unique needs. Your plan may include Dialectal Behavior Therapy (DBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Internal Family Systems (IFS), psychodynamic/relational, and somatic techniques to explore different aspects of yourself, practice coping strategies, regulate your nervous system, and develop a new relationship with difficult thoughts and feelings. My own mental health challenges, alongside supporting family members through their mental illnesses, shaped my path toward therapeutic care. These personal experiences deepened my commitment to destigmatizing mental illness and demystifying therapy by providing accessible care that makes people feel seen and heard. I bring this anti-oppressive and culturally responsive perspective to my practice now, ensuring care that is grounded in the understanding that cultural expectations, intergenerational patterns, shame, and systemic barriers can deeply influence how safe and comfortable someone feels in therapy. In my free time, I love immersing myself in the great outdoors, from swimming to camping beneath the stars. I also enjoy the arts: water coloring, watching a fantastic show or movie, and crafting!
Psychotherapy is a co-created experience between the therapist and client. For over 20 years I have had the honor of working with people who feel stuck in their lives, whether it be their jobs, their relationships, or perhaps in some part of their identity. By bringing non-judgmental curiosity to our work together, it is my goal to create a safe and welcoming space within which we can explore the patterns of behavior that may not be serving their purpose anymore. I enjoy working with teens and adults, providing them with support to be their most authentic selves. My experience as a middle school counselor afforded me the opportunity to work with children and their families during an often very tumultuous time. It is there that I developed an interest in gender and sexuality development and I have worked with many families whose child has undergone a social transition regarding their gender identity. I consult with schools on how best to support children socially transitioning, and give workshops to teachers & professionals on how to create more inclusive classrooms. I also have extensive experience working with children with learning disabilities. In addition to my work as a clinical social worker, I am a sexuality educator and am pursuing a PhD.
We are a boutique psychotherapy practice located in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, offering individual therapy, couples counseling, therapy groups, costume therapy, and psychedelic integration work. We are an excellent match for people who subscribe to alternative lifestyles, and our areas of expertise are working with artists as well as the LGBTQIA+ communities. As a pre-licensed mental health counselor with three years of experience, I help neurodiverse adolescents and young adults navigate struggles with executive functioning, emotional regulation, life transitions, grief, interpersonal communication, and identity exploration. I love working with patients who are curious about their behaviors and want to learn more about themselves as they navigate their personal mental health journey. My hope is to be an extension of your support system as you move through life’s natural transitions, finding healthier ways to express yourself while offering unconditional positive regard, empathy, and a listening ear. If you feel like this resonates with you, please reach out so we can chat further! When working with younger populations, I integrate play and expressive arts therapies into my sessions. For older populations, I use aspects of Dialectal Behavior Therapy (DBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), allowing patients to have a say in personalizing their space and treatment goals. I take a fluid and ever-changing approach to therapy as I learn new skills and modalities to share, and to better customize care to each person’s unique story and needs. In the first few sessions, we collaboratively set treatment goals and work together to find the most impactful modalities to use. Whether this includes solution-focused activities or meaningful conversations to better process life events, the goal is to give you a space to be authentically yourself with the ability to comfortably share feedback and tailor sessions to better curate your healing journey. I was drawn to the mental health field at a young age through my own struggles to find my voice and better advocate for myself. As a neurodivergent clinician, I empathize with the difficulty in finding a space where individuals feel truly heard and understood. This unique perspective has led me to curating personalized spaces for my patients to make strides toward their treatment goals in a way that feels authentic to them. A huge music enthusiast, I love to attend concerts and musicals on my days off, as well as draw, write, and walk my dog around the neighborhood. I'm also an avid thrifter and am constantly pushing my personal style to new heights!

I look forward to helping empower you to achieve your goals in our work together. *Appointments are available for patients who can communicate in both English and Russian and/or who culturally would feel more comfortable with someone who is Russian speaking. I'm passionate about how therapy can be a transformative process that empowers you to better understand yourself and live with greater clarity, balance, and fulfillment. My approach is humanistic and holistic, a style that ensures a warm, collaborative, and nonjudgmental environment tailored to your unique experiences and goals. Treatment includes integrative psychodynamic therapy, Dialectal Behavior Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and relational evidence-based interventions to help you process and explore beliefs about the world and yourself. My path to becoming a therapist started at St. Francis's College Counseling Center, where I worked as a student counselor. This experience taught me the value of providing empathetic and strength-based care for emerging and older adults alike. Now, I remain committed to bringing a grounding and calming presence to each session, along with a deep respect for every person’s unique lived experience. In my free time I often enjoy calming activities that keep me grounded. These include going for long walks, reading, thrifting, visiting museums, and junk journaling.

Health and wellness are not linear and will only evolve within a dynamic and complex interplay of the many systems in our lives. I firmly believe that promoting mental health is a part of this interplay. I can help you with exploring those systems relevant to your mental health and developing strategies and routines to promote a robust everyday experience. I call this promoting your mental “Wellth”; because we can consider ourselves wealthy when our whole being is supported and living in abundance, not just our financials. My hope for the clients that I work with is that you will find the experience of working on your presenting needs and concerns to be a robust challenge. One that brings you closer to being the person you know you can be and closer to maintaining the lifestyle and relationships that are ideal for you.

Hi, I’m Jennifer Shrier, a psychotherapist specializing in working with college students, young adults, and adults. I understand that the college years can be both exciting and overwhelming — a time of transition, pressure, identity development, relationship challenges, and increasing independence. My approach to therapy is warm, collaborative, and supportive. I aim to create a space where clients feel comfortable being themselves and talking openly about what they’re going through, without judgment. I work with students navigating anxiety, stress, depression, self-esteem concerns, relationship issues, academic pressure, life transitions, and questions around identity and direction. In therapy, I believe the relationship itself is important. I strive to help clients feel understood while also building insight, coping skills, resilience, and greater self-awareness. My style is thoughtful and engaged, and I tailor treatment to each individual’s needs and goals. Reaching out for support can feel difficult, and I value creating a space where students can feel safe, supported, and empowered as they navigate this stage of life.
