Therapists for college students near New York, NY
About Me: Hello, I'm Nhi, a dedicated first-generation social work intern in my second year at Columbia University's School of Social Work. I hold a B.A. in Psychology from Grinnell College and bring a deeply personal understanding of mental health challenges shaped by my own experiences as an Asian American in foster care. My journey has been profoundly influenced by the intersection of intergenerational trauma, immigration, and systemic inequalities, providing me with a unique perspective on the complexities of healing and resilience. My Approach: I believe that trauma and mental health struggles do not exist in a vacuum—they are often reflections of broader societal issues. Growing up in a family affected by intergenerational trauma, poverty, and systemic discrimination, I understand firsthand the cascading effects these forces can have on a person's mental and emotional well-being, even into adulthood. This insight drives my therapeutic approach, where I aim to provide a compassionate, culturally sensitive space for clients to explore their experiences and find healing. I bring extensive experience working with diverse populations and complex trauma. During my time as a case manager at a domestic violence shelter, I supported individuals and families from all walks of life, many of whom were dealing with overlapping traumas, including domestic violence, mental health struggles, homelessness, childhood trauma, and identity-based discrimination. This experience reinforced my belief that trauma and mental health challenges are often intertwined with larger societal issues. Mental health challenges can significantly impact daily functioning, even long after the precipitating events have occurred. In some cases, there may be no clear cause, yet the impact is still profound. Regardless of the situation, everyone deserves support in their healing journey. In my practice, I adopt a flexible, client-centered approach, tailoring my methods to meet each individual's unique needs and strengths. I utilize a range of therapeutic techniques, including trauma-informed therapy, person-centered therapy, motivational interviewing, cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), and dialectical behavior therapy (DBT). I believe every person has the inherent capacity to navigate their challenges, and my role is to support, empower, and provide tools for their journey toward healing. What to Expect: In our work together, you can expect a supportive, non-judgmental environment where your experiences are honored, and your voice is central to the healing process. I am committed to understanding your story in its full context, recognizing the multiple layers of identity and experience that shape who you are. Whether you're dealing with personal trauma, managing day-to-day stressors, or seeking a deeper understanding of yourself, I'm here to walk alongside you, providing the guidance and support you need. We assess each client's environment, family, biological factors, and experiences from childhood to the present day. We consider a strong therapeutic relationship to be the highest indicator of progress in therapy. Being able to be open with one another enhances the therapy process. Without a strong rapport between therapist and client, safety doesn't exist, and barriers to positive change exist. After gathering history and establishing rapport, we then tailor treatment to each client’s unique needs. We provide EMDR (trauma therapy) as well as regular talk psychotherapy.

I was called to this work at a young age after seeing that many people in my neighborhood in the Bronx and in my parents’ home country had no access to mental health care. I wanted to be able to provide mental health support to people from all walks of life. I received my bachelor's of science in psychology from Fordham University, where I subsequently completed my Master of Social Work degree. Following graduation, I became a family therapist, helping parents and youth work on complex family issues and conflict resolution. I worked in a variety of settings, including psychiatric residences, homeless outreach, New York City’s Administration for Children's Services, and a group psychotherapy practice in the Financial District. I currently provide individual psychotherapy as a private practitioner in addition to working at Montefiore Medical Center as a senior mental health specialist. I strive to create a welcoming environment from the very first session. I believe in forming a strong alliance with my clients to create a comfortable space to open up about personal struggles. Collaboration, humor, and validation are key components to my work. I guide people in learning skills that are applicable to everyday life. I was raised in a very racially, ethnically, and religiously diverse environment. Support of marginalized people is a core part of my worldview and translates into my practice. I enjoy working with individuals of diverse backgrounds and identities and helping them navigate the modern world.

We all get overwhelmed. New challenges can emerge, coping skills cease working, and new skills need developing. Therapy can help light the way. Whether you are dealing with anxiety, panic, depression, ADHD or everyday life becoming unmanageable, therapy can provide you with the tools to cope. I want to be there to support you during this process. Successful therapy starts with the formation of the counselor-client bond. Therapy is a relationship where a private, supportive, and non-judgmental alliance is fostered. Psychic injuries, biological dispositions, familial experiences, and successful life experiences shape our present. The past affects how we relate to others and why we carry wounds into the present. New and old life events can lead to self-destructive coping. Therapy can heal wounds and impart insight. Symptoms and diagnosis need not define us. We can learn to appreciate life’s joy and successes. Call for a no-fee phone consultation and start the journey. I practice an integrative approach to counseling informed by Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Motivational Interviewing and Attachment theory. I specialize in the treatment of depression, bipolar, ADHD, and anxiety disorders. Other areas of concentration include improving self esteem, increasing assertiveness, improving interpersonal relationships, and managing life transitions. Our counseling experience starts with a no fee phone screening to see if we are a good fit. You and I will ask a couple questions to get an idea of what you are going through. If I have the right tools and you feel comfortable, we will proceed to the paperwork and setting up our first Telehealth session.
Making the decision to go to counseling can often feel overwhelming. Whether you’re just beginning your counseling journey, or looking to make a change, I recognize the importance of working with a counselor who feels like the right fit for you. I seek to cultivate a mutual sense of trust, respect, and comfort in the therapeutic space to create the necessary foundation for any therapeutic work to begin. I take a trauma-informed approach guided by feminist perspectives that is tailored to each client. I integrate techniques from a range of perspectives, as I firmly believe every client is different and requires an approach that fits their individual needs. I strive to empower you to explore your experiences in a non-judgemental and supportive environment. I enjoy working with individuals 18+ on anxiety, trauma, women’s issues, and life transitions, though I have experience treating a range of presentations. Healing is not a linear process and what may sometimes seem like a step back is often a step forward. I look forward to working with you and sharing in all that your unique journey brings!

So many students can feel overwhelmed… by choices, by things that need to be done, by relationships at home and at school, by worries about your own life and the broader world, by figuring out who you are… who you want to be… where you fit in… where you want to go. I want to help you grow to cope more easily with all that’s on your plate. I also specialize in supporting caregivers of all kinds. Do you have aging parents, a loved one with dementia or chronic illness, or children (perhaps with special needs) who need your care? Are you a health care worker, teacher, or volunteer? I want to help you balance caring for others with valuing and taking better care of yourself. When we work together, you are in charge; you drive the boat. I view my role as coach, pit crew, investigator, occasional guest lecturer, comic relief, gentle nudge, and trusted companion on your path. My work is all about your strengths and your vision–finding them, sorting between them, nurturing them to take you in directions you want to go. Our work is also about play: finding the courage and confidence to dream, to try, to try again, to try a different route. You can do both, staying present to enjoy as much as possible of your now while moving towards a future that makes your heart sing. All identities warmly welcome.
