Skeptical? Good! The therapeutic relationship and experience of your counselor should be taken seriously. If you are courageous enough to seek support; do your homework, find a good fit and be cautious of snake oil and shortcuts. You know more about your experience than anyone. Be open, trust your gut. Trailhead. I require a free 15-minute call to ensure we are a good fit. If not, I will provide recommendations or referral to get you to the most helpful resource. Best part of my work. I enjoy working with clients who have been through challenging times and keep fighting the voice that undermines their accomplishments, goals and aspirations. Like a great deal of my colleagues – I find this privileged, difficult and honorable work. I value diversity. My career allowed me to interact with everyone and anyone – I am more interesting and compassionate because of it. Training and Experience. On paper, I am a master's prepared social worker, seasoned as a licensed clinical social worker and have 20 years of experience empowering individuals, professionals and systems in the criminal justice, government, and healthcare sectors. I am a University at Buffalo School of Social Work alum from back in the day. I am a dad and husband. I am passionate, warm, ambiverted, sometimes grumpy, professional. I do not have a brand. Raised on hip hop, straight edge hardcore and skateboarding. I found my education and profession by accident. When I’m down and feel like an imposter, I remember this. The rest I found in pain, love, and my own therapy. Enough about me, let's find what is important to you! Approaches Mindfulness based: most generally, exercises and a practice on awareness of your senses. Simple and radically transforming. This approach is unique, flexible and backed by research and measurable outcomes. It’s accessible, experiential, and highly rewarding. I view this approach as mind hacks to get around the junk in your head and drop back into your body. Trauma informed: incorporating evidenced based practices, common courtesy and acknowledgment that all of us have experienced hurts in some form. It is a way to embody and practice a non-pathologizing approach that honors your past while being grounded in the present. Systems oriented: life in context gives us freedom to understand ourselves and accurately place the hurt of our experiences back where they belong. Internal Family Systems has impacted my practice and personal growth.
Since 1985, we have been committed to helping our clients and their families overcome and deal with substance abuse and dependency issues, including alcohol, drugs, prescription medications, smoking, and vaping. Our state of the art, holistic approach to treatment and long-term recovery includes addressing the medical, psychological, social, family and behavioral factors that influence and perpetuate these complex and chronic health conditions. We believe the most successful treatment strategies are based on the needs of each individual. As every story is different, so is each path to recovery and wellness. We help our clients map out their own unique strategy, and guide them along the way.
Never thought you'd find yourself looking for a therapist, or had a disappointing therapy experience before? Much of the success of treatment depends on finding someone whom you can trust, who is as invested in seeing you make progress as you are. I have a solid track record working with children, adolescents, adults and families to create change in their lives...even when situations feel hopeless. I use an integrative approach that draws from relational, psychodynamic, cognitive-behavioral, and systems modalities. I am a trained drama therapist and play therapist, and use these skills when they help to support the treatment process. I offer individual, group, and family therapy. I am adjunct faculty at NYU and Lesley University, former supervisor at a residential treatment center, and the author of numerous articles and four books on trauma, child/adolescent treatment, and working with boys. Hello! My name is Abigayle Bennett, but you can call me Abi. I am in my second year of my Master’s of Social Work at Binghamton University and hold an Associate’s in Human Services and a Bachelor’s in Psychology with a minor in Education. I have been working in children’s and family services for the majority of my career, and hope to eventually open a Child and Family Development Center and offer an inclusive space for families to seek tools and resources to improve their family’s mental well-being. I specialize in areas such as anxiety, mood disorders, parenting and family issues, relationships, self-esteem, self-harm, lgbtq+ youth, and domestic/sexual abuse. I strive to create a laid-back, open, and approachable environment in our sessions. I understand that starting therapy can be daunting, but I aim to make our therapeutic relationship as comfortable and supportive as possible. My goal is to be someone you feel at ease talking to so that you can freely share and explore your thoughts and feelings. I know how intimidating it can be to bare your soul to a stranger, so I want to work together to build a strong therapeutic relationship so we can tackle your needs as a team. I firmly believe that mental health has to start from a sort of ground-up perspective. In order to control your feelings, emotions, and reactions, you have to understand them and be able to respond to them using tools that meet you where you’re at. I practice primarily using CBT, DBT, mindfulness, attachment theory, and family systems theory. In our sessions, we will use an eclectic mix of various therapeutic frameworks to best meet your needs. In session, this may look like guided meditations, processing past traumas, exploring family dynamics, and cognitive reprogramming techniques. By utilizing a mix of modalities, we can work together to find ways to best respond to the difficulties and struggles you may be facing, and hopefully overall improve your quality of life.

I believe that what brings many people to therapy is a sense of disconnection (from themselves, others, or the world around them). Alongside disconnection, clients may experience depression, anxiety, stress, relationship concerns, job/career concerns, loneliness, anger, body pains, among other symptoms. I’m passionate about working with clients to help them identify, understand, and reconnect with the parts of themselves and their experiences that they disconnected from throughout the years. It is through this work that clients are able to show up more authentically and experience greater meaning and fulfillment in their lives. I work primarily from relational and attachment based frameworks while incorporating complementary modalities, prioritizing client needs/goals. My specialty is working with individuals with relationship concerns, identity exploration, and life transitions. Additionally, I have expertise working with college/graduate students and emerging adults. I wholeheartedly believe that much of the healing and growth process occurs within the context of relationships (whether that be in the relationships with others or with yourself). Therefore, I emphasize the importance of finding a good fit with a therapist and encourage reaching out if you feel we may be a good fit. I look forward to connecting!
