Therapists for college students near New York, NY
I am a New York state licensed clinical psychologist, supervisor, and doctoral professor. I work with individual adults and couples experiencing distress due to fluctuations in mood, changing life circumstances, difficult relationships, and uncertain identity. Given my own multicultural identity, I approach every patient with compassion and curiosity for their experiences, encouraging those I work with to practice the same. I find that the most successful therapy is a result of healthy collaboration, trust, and creating a safe space to do the work. Let’s do this.

This nurturing atmosphere is essential for those navigating the complexities of early adulthood.

We offer trauma-focused strengths-based therapy to individuals, caregivers, and families. When working with children, families will be engaged in play therapy sessions to encourage bonding, communication, and growth. With adolescents and adults, using CBT techniques, we will focus on replacing negative thinking with positive self-talk and adapting positive coping mechanisms. Through Somatic Experiencing techniques, we can tap into physical and emotional symptoms associated with trauma -- locked into the body -- and guide you into identifying and utilizing the innate healing capacity in your body.

ADHD is more than just "having difficulty focusing," and no, not "everyone has a little bit of ADHD" as many people claim nowadays. The impact of ADHD is pervasive and can keep you from reaching your goals, connecting with others, maintaining a routine despite knowing that it would be helpful, and constantly "masking" for fear that you will not be accepted as you are. Life administrative tasks feel daunting and get postponed repeatedly, and the negative self-talk that ensues as a result takes a further toll and increases avoidance. I can help you understand the brain science of ADHD, incorporate aspects of mindfulness, somatic work, and other modalities to overcome these challenges, and regain your mental energy. You'll learn to work with your neurodivergence, NOT against it. I work from an anti-oppressive, anti-racist, lens and am mindful about how culture, immigration journeys and systemic racism play a role in how someone compensates for their ADHD.

Alanna Stark is a Mental Health Counselor who calls on her experience as an educator to truly connect with her clients, maximize their current potential, and achieve future goals. She has a gentle and empathic approach and is passionate about helping others work through obstacles in their personal, social, and professional lives. Her particular interests include helping clients with issues related to anxiety, life transitions, improving interpersonal relationships, depression, self-esteem, and ADHD. Every individual is unique and has different needs. It is my job to tailor my approach to you. My approach to therapy is collaborative, where we will explore current difficulties, personal beliefs, and values. I may offer you a different perspective, I may challenge you in a supportive way, and I may suggest various coping strategies so that you can start to make the changes that you want. I understand the difficulty of deeply understanding and facing thoughts, behaviors, and relationships. As your therapist, I will support you and be authentic with you.
