Hello! I'm so glad you're taking this step for your mental health. I went to the therapy for the first time while attending college (at USC too!), and it was pivotal for me. I really value working with college students, and genuinely appreciate how much you have to do deal with. Maybe you're struggling with transitions - adjusting to the start of college, or facing the daunting landscape post-graduation. Maybe you can feel all the pressures mounting to the point where you feel paralyzed and burnt out and confused. Maybe you'd like for just one thing - anything - to be taken off your plate, or for the load to be shared somehow. Maybe you're even trying to figure yourself out beyond the story that's been your life so far. I'd like to help make things seem clearer, or kinder, or safer, and I think we can do it together. I offer 45-minute sessions, as well as longer 90-minute sessions, to fit what you might need best. I also offer letters for medical transition, disability, ESA, and can complete return to school forms.

I work with individuals across the adult lifespan. I find great joy serving college students and graduate students, and professionals in academia. I have spent many years working in university counseling centers including University of Iowa, UC Davis, CSUN, Indiana University and Cornell Health. My practice tends to focus on helping clients improve their relationship with self, others and the world around them. Some common themes in my practice are self-discovery; self-compassion; gratitude; boundary setting; clarifying values, needs and wants, and intention; mindset; health and wellness; mindfulness; and finding ways to live more present and fully.

My clients say that they find my honest, warm, and straightforward approach to be refreshing and helpful. Whether you're dealing with relationship issues, school stress, or a sense of being stuck, these obstacles can trigger anxiety, depression, and other mental health concerns. The fear of judgment or the dread of something terrible happening can weigh heavily on your mind. High standards, whether self-imposed or external, might feel impossible to meet, leaving you feeling overwhelmed. You don't have to face these challenges alone. Together, we can develop effective strategies to help you embrace life fully, fostering a sense of control and freedom. I specialize in supporting adults and teens, particularly those who identify as LGBTQIA+ or performing artists, who are feeling anxious, sad, and overwhelmed. My approach helps manage anxiety, depression, ADHD, insomnia, and OCD, offering thoughtful conversations and practical tools to get you back to living fully. Finding the right therapist can be daunting, but I'm here to make the process easier. Call me Michael, not "Doctor Jacobs." I consider my approach to be direct, warm and less formal. I want you to know that I'm human too, and we're in this together. Reach out today to see if we're a good fit and take the first step towards getting better.

I use evidence-based treatments to address a wide range of problems including anxiety disorders and stress management, obsessive-compulsive and related disorders (ex: OCD, skin picking, hair pulling), PTSD, mood disorders (ex: depression, bipolar disorder), and insomnia. My treatment approach explores the connection between thoughts, feelings, and behaviors and incorporates mindfulness and acceptance techniques to help make lasting changes in your everyday life. I find that this approach adds to my clients’ understanding of themselves and helps them develop greater self-compassion and empowerment in the face of their difficulties. I believe that anyone can benefit from counseling, whether or not you have a significant mental health issue or are just facing stressful situations and life transitions. I work collaboratively with each individual client to form goals and a treatment plan that is as unique as the person I'm working with. Common issues that I help clients with include (but are not limited to): anxiety, depression, trauma, stress, anger management, relationship issues, LGBTQIA issues and concerns, self-esteem, family issues, and overall self-improvement. Some clients are looking for short-term counseling to address a specific issue that they currently face, while others are looking for long-term counseling to work through issues from the past or to learn to cope with chronic symptoms. I am here to help no matter where you fall on that spectrum! I am also happy to speak with you on the phone before setting up an initial appointment to determine if I am a good fit for what you hope to get out of therapy.
